Writing a cover letter can be a nightmare, especially if you are not sure what to include. Our advice will inspire you to write something excellent.
When you finally finish crafting your CV, you may be relieved that everything is done and you are ready to apply for new jobs. However, this is only half of the task as with every excellent CV comes an amazing cover letter!
Cover letters are typically required for all job applications and give you an opportunity to show how you meet the job description and share what you have to offer that will make them want to interview you.
How Do I Start Writing a Great Cover Letter?
If you are struggling to get started, then here are some simple tips to give you the boost you need!
Know What They Need
Your cover letter should make it clear to any prospective employer that you know what they need. You do this by using the job description to help inform the information you share. Take the time to really get to grips with what they are looking for and show them, through your letter, that you tick all the boxes!
Know Who They Are
One common gripe among businesses is that applications often feel generic and leave HR teams wondering if the applicant really wants to work for them or not. One way to avoid this is to show the company that you have taken the time to research and find out about them and what they offer and that you are the person that will fit in with their ethos and values.
Address It Correctly
It may sound simple but sending your letter to the wrong person in the organisation is sure to set alarm bells ringing about your attention to detail. Make sure you find out who to send it to and then address it correctly to them.
Think About Formatting
No matter how much you love fun fonts and emojis, make sure that your application letter is professionally formatted with clear paragraphs. Plus, try to avoid rambling! Many adverts will give you a maximum length for your letter but if not, aim for one full page so that you keep them interested in what you have to say.

Sign Off Correctly
Finally, remember that you should always use a formal salutation to end the letter. If you know the person’s name, then sign off with ‘Yours sincerely’ and if you don’t use ‘Yours faithfully’. This attention to detail will show the recruiting team that you are serious about the vacancy.
